The Friendship Necklace

I've been busy brushing up on my silversmithing skills by taking another class. My husband Jimmy is also learning this craft. Together Our Plan is to start creating silversmithed or metal worked pieces of jewelry for my shop. My Goal is to add a new "level" of jewelry to my online Etsy and ArtFire shops. This will allow me to be more creative as well as add a new dimension of jewelry for you my customers. Look forward to silver smithed gemstone rings, necklaces, and earrings in the near future.

A customer specially requested me to create this Native American Friendship Necklace. She sent me a photo of a tattoo of this design. I was caught by this symbol's Simplicity and Feminine Beauty with its Flowing Swirls.

This Native American Symbol represents "Friendship"...the top loop connects to You and the bottom "open" loop connects to your Friend and/or Loved one...the 2 of you are eternally "connected" by these feminine swirls of friendship.

Using traditional Silversmithing Jewelry techniques, I drew out the design with my own creative touches, hand formed the Sterling Silver wire into the shapes of my design, cut and filed the edges, hammered and textured it, soldered the pieces together and then buffed it.

I was very pleased with the results. This Friendship charm has the beauty and simplicity that I wanted to capture.

DIY...HOW TO MAKE A SHIPPING MAILER BAG OUT OF SHOPPING BAGS

Mailing packages can cost a pretty penny. Here's a way to recycle your old shopping bags and create shipping mailers that are one of a kind, fit your item to be shipped, and are inexpensive.

Materials Needed:

Old Cardboard Gift Box or comparable, Clear Packing Tape, Scissors, Ruler, Paper Shopping Bag.

I use these dimensions for my mailers... 8" x 12". But adjust it to fit the items you're going to mail.

Tip: Use an old gift box to cut your template...thin cardboard.

This is a great way to recycle your paper shopping bags.

Tip: Choose ones that have good sturdy paper.

Cut open the bag...down the sides and across the bottom.

Using your template as a guide, cut out as many mailer blanks as you can.

Tip: Remove the handles and excess cardboard which only adds unnecessary weight to your mailer package.

Fold a Mailer in Half.

If you're kinda anal like me, you can trim down the sides that are uneven.

Tip: easiest way is to use your paper trimmer tool.

To make it sturdy, I fold over the edges and tape it down using packaging tape.

1) I cut at an angle, the bottom corner where the 2 "open sides" meet.

2) Next, I fold over the edge a bit...up to you how much you want to fold over...and then tape down.

3) I do the same thing to the other open side. I leave the "top" part of the mailer open.

Tip: For tapes to use, use clear strong packaging tape or Duct Tape (comes in neat colors). You don't want your mailer to fall apart during mailing. Make sure the Tape Sticks to the Bag...if paper is too slick, your tape may not stick. If this happens, use a Different type of bag OR you'll need to Tape Up your entire bag.

To ready your item for mailing, first wrap Item in bubble wrap and tape down.

This will provide that "cushiness" needed when mailing....just like those

more expensive bubble mailers that they sell.

After you insert your item in the mailer, then fold down the top open area and tape securely down.

Finally, double check your mailer and Tape over Any places that look like it needs taping...

like thin areas, seams in the bag, corners, etc.etc. You want to make sure that the mailer is secure.

Final step: Just add your shipping label and you're ready to ship!

Tip: I like to decorate my mailers with cute colorful decorated tape. It gives it just that little extra something.

I told you I was in a sewing mood...it just takes me awhile to get started. I LoVe LoVe LoVe fabric...the color, the designs, the textures, the trims. But, sewing in general kinda makes me get the whillies sometimes because I gotta really "think" about how to do it. My young summer sewing classes come to mind. Sewing is a much more time consuming thing for me than jewelry making. There's a ton more steps...but maybe it's just bc I don't do it as often as I would like. Maybe if I keep on doing it, I'll get way way faster where I can do "breathe" sewing where it just comes so naturally I don't even think about it. That's the way I do jewelry..."breathe" jewelry making.

Anyhoo, I got an itching to start using my lovely fabrics..both vintage and modern. And the gorgeous trims ribbons buttons and other thingamajiggys that I've collected over the years...they all seem to be giving me that mermaid call.

So, this week, I dragged out my containers of materials and shoe boxes of trims and got "close" to them again. Inspired, I made these 2 vintage pillowcase tote bags. I learned the technique from Tif at her Dottie Angel weekend retreat sewing class last September in Seattle WA. I wear my tote bag I made at Tif's class all the time. And, gals always always stop me and tell me that it's super cute...thanks, I know...oooo, not too modest aren't I?

But, this time, I changed up the design and gave it my own twist...adjusting the Length and added the flip over collar at the top. I found that the original design from Tif was a bit toooooo long for me. I'm only 5' 1" and my arms have a hard time digging to the bottom of the long tote. So, I came up with my own way to shorten it and give me a top cuff to embellish. Now, I can easily reach into the bottom of the bag and there's still plenty of room.

Love them! I'm going to make more...and make more things with my fabric. I'll show you more photos when I'm done.

This year, we have several Weddings to attend. The first of the season is my cousin Lisa's wedding. I created this Wedding card for her and Galen. I just love butterflies. They always make me think of Freedom, Joy, and Love.

I was wondering...how did I get to this design? You know, when I create my cards, they just "happen". I just let my mind go and my hands start picking up papers, stamps, stamp pads, etc. I enjoy creating these small works of art...it relaxes me and happens quite naturally. If I'm having a "hard" time creating, I put it down and walk away and return to it later. Other times, it just flows like water and I move from one step to the next. Just adding as I see fit. Very similar process I use to create jewelry.

Vintage Footstool...Project from Tif's Workshop

Vintage Footstool Transformation...

I purchased the above stool from an Etsy shopowner.

I loved the little feet and her dark mahagony color.

She's the perfect size for me to use when sitting on my couch

so my feet don't "dangle" down.

At Tif's workshop in September 2010,

I created this footstool topper using vintage light Aqua fabric and

sewed on vintage doilies and handsewed on vintage Mother of Pearl buttons.

This little pretty looks very good in her new cottage home.

California Pizza Kitchen's (CPK's) Awesome Artichoke Spinach Dip Recipe Pictorial

Brown the Onion & Garlic in Olive Oil and Butter

Sprinkle in the Flour & Stir

Add in the Chicken Stock...

Add in the Cream (I used Organic Milk)...

and then the other ingredients according to the recipe.

If it seems to "watery", then turn up the heat, keep stirring,

do NOT leave the stove, turn down the heat when it thickens.

If it's too thick, add some more milk/cream/half and half until it's the right

consistency. It should be kinda thick, sorta Thicker than Elmer's Glue.

Last step, Add in the Spinach, Sour Cream, and rest of ingredients.

Try this on Toasted slices of Baguettes or French Bread

...a bit more filling than the chips.

I've made this California Pizza Kitchen Spinach Artichoke recipe twice already. Each time I made it, People Raved about it. I mean it. It's absolutely to "die for". Yum Yum.

When we go to CPK, we sometimes splurge and get this dip. It's delish! This past Christmas, I decided to make a hot gooey dip for our family Christmas dinner party. I did some internet research and found this recipe. I made it, tasted it, and knew that everyone would just love it...it tastes just like how it does at the restaurant. And I was right, everyone loved it. My younger brother even wanted to keep the leftover dip...that's how good it was.

My sister-in-law told me that CPK had a recipe book. The very next day, I used my Border's 40% off coupon and got their Pasta, Salads, and Sides cookbook. It had this very recipe that I had found on the internet.

Recently, I made it again because I just wanted to. I shared it with some of our friends....they loved it. OK, enough said. Go and make it the next time you need to prepare a hot dip...like the Superbowl game, Oscar night, the next family get together. It has a lot of ingredients but nothing you probably don't already have or can readily get. And, while it does take a little longer to prepare than your normal dip, it IS well worth the extra effort.

Slip Dresses Dottie Angel Style

Day 2 of the Dottie Angel Workshop...

The First day of our actual workshop, I call it Day 2 bc I each day that I was there was a memorable day. Little did we know it but we were going to experience Our Version of Project Runway. On Saturday, our 1st day of creating together, Tif eased us into our projects with her Grannie Vintage Apron project. Each of us brought vintage (aka "old" for those not in the know) pillow cases, variety of vintage fabrics laces and trims to create with. Our first project took 1/2 the day. The whir of the sewing machines, the cursing (wait, I think that was just me!), and chatter filled the dining room converted to sewing room. We had a lot of sewing machines to choose from brought by various gals to share. At the end, each gal had a Gorgeous One of a Kind Unique Apron that really showed each gals' personality and style. Everyone was overflowing and in creative Full Throttle Overdrive. What a great way to start the weekend!

After the scrumptious lunch prepared by Angela herself, we started on our 2nd project of Vintage Slip Dresses. Side note: Angela is an Excellent Chef Extraordinaire! Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner...Wow! A treat for the Tummy. She always had something available for us to eat throughout the day. Fresh Fruit, drinks...tea, waters, coffee, wine, things to nibble on, Fresh Delicious Salads, Salmon, Pastas, on and on and on. She was our personal chef for 4 days straight. Yowzah! Our 2nd project for the day was creating these Gorgeous Vintage Slip Dresses. Many gals had already hand dyed their slips. Coming off the high of creating our lovely aprons, now we were creating pretty pretty dresses. The pressure was on. We started feeling like contestants on Project Runway. Clock ticking, Angela won't feed us until we finished our dresses...OMG! Do I want to hand embroider? Want to add more Lace? Want to sew on more buttons? Cut the hem? At the end of the day, Everyone's slip dresses looked Diva-licious. We were all thrilled with our Dottie Angel handiwork.

Tif was thee Perfect Hostess with the Mostest. Like Tim Gunn, she went from gal to gal, checking on each of us, helping us with decision making, giving helpful advice, making terrific suggestions. And Always Always gave Positive Encouragement. Talk about the Energizer Bunny. Tif was Tif but with endless seeming energy. Always calm, always motherly, always always Creatively Positive. The Perfect Teacher.

Day 1 of my Dottie Angel Adventure...

After depositing all my luggage at the B&B, Louise (my London flatmate) and I head next door to check out the "Work Mansion". From the front door, we know we are at the right place. Everything is Dottie-fied. There are jars of flowers lining the doorway to greet us. When we enter, there are vintage fabric banners hanging from the posts. The dark kinda scary mansion has been given a good once over by Tif herself. It's like walking into a magazine shoot really. Everywhere you look, the dark wood has been gentrified with the Dottie touch.

In the center of the living room, there are couches and chairs covered in colorful vintage sheets and fabrics of Tif's taste. She's even brought her own vintage covered pillows! Wow! Above the mantel, her embroidered and sewn hangings gaily greet us. What a thrill. I know I made the right decision. No doubt about it now.

And, when Tif herself walks into the room to greet us, it's like a real life celebrity is in our midst. Really. Tif is just what you would imagine her to be...delightfully british like polite but with a down home loving touch, very energetic but not the type that sucks your energy from you...in fact, you feel her giving you energy, and when she talks, it's just like she's talking to you...each one of us, not leaving anyone out. If you were to bump into her at the local store, she would definitely be the type of person you could easily strike up a conversation with. That's Tif.

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings as we start working on our projects...

In late September, I ventured off to Seattle Washington to attend an all vintage fabric workshop with Tif of the Dottie Angel world. I luckily "found" this workshop while checking in on her blog. The workshop was created by Angela of Angela Ritchie's Ace Camps. This was the very first time I ever "went away" to attend a crafty workshop. The perfect thing to get my creative juices going in a different direction for my Etsy shops.

In the past year, I've inherited a lot of old doilies and hand embroidered lovelies created by people's grandmothers and aunts. When I came across Tif's workshop, I knew this was the very thing I needed to get me going on how to re-use these lovelies with a more modern and usable fashion.

Here are some photos of my 1st day there. I got dropped off at the front door of the B&B Shafer Baillie Mansion where I stayed with my London roommate Louise for 3 nights. During the day, we were across the street in another Victorian mansion sewing and cutting away with 11 other creative women participants and Tif herself.

Flying back to Oahu from Seattle, Took some shots from our window seat before landing. The clouds looked so pretty. They remind me of cotton candy "splats". And, I don't know exactly where our pilot flew off to before we landed but it seemed as if we were coming in from the Ewa Beach side of the island. Awful lot of buildings below..could be just Sand Island area. It wasn't the normal tip and dive onto the landing area.

Our Papayas are so Sweet and Juicy...with Greek Yogurt, Walnuts, and local Honey

This year, we finally decided to grow our own papaya trees. We constantly eat papayas throughout the year. The seed are thrown into our backyard compost pile and these little papaya plants sprouted up. So, we randomly planted the little seedlings and prayed for good papayas. I swear, I had to wait about a year for the seedlings to grow into tall trees. And, it seemed like MONTHS (5+) for the flowers to turn into these globes of orangey goodness. I pick them when they turn a bit of orange to avoid having to beat off the neighborhood birds. Then, they ripen to a yellow/orange in my kitchen near the window. Awwww....Delicious! Utter Heaven! Worth the wait.

I've always looked thru their catalogs and envisioned my home being so clean, mod and chic...and then I wake up in a puddle of drool!

So, it did seem a bit like walking thru Alice's Looking Glass when we came smack dab into West Elm in the Pearl District of Portland OR. I wasn't into the "buying" mood, more just amazed at their creative decor. Talk about "what can I do with cardboard boxes?"...wow! no more playing hide and seek kids! Chandeliers galore hanging from the ceilings....all just plain ole cardboard.

Just returned from a Biz trip to Portland Oregon. We visited the famous Pearl District filled with neat stores. Of course, I had to tour the inside of the Anthropology. It's always so inspiring! Vintage-Like items all over the store. Here's just a sneak peek of some of the many things to see in their store.

We also checked out West Elm and Powell's Bookstore. There were a lot of neat shops in the many streets that make up the Pearl District. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to visit all of them..too little time and too much to see. Onward!

Steph asked me to decorate each jewelry box differently.
I had so much Fun doing this.
I LoVe decorating Jewelry boxes...the Icing on the Wedding Cake.

Stephanie, the adorable Bride, emailed me asking about my necklaces for her Lucky Bridesmaids and decided on the Everything's Coming Up Daisies necklace for each of them. I really LoVe this necklace which is made by me using Lovely Large Keshi White Pearls and a Citrine Gemstone center on Sterling Silver chain.

For herself, Steph chose my "I Am In Love" Bridal Earrings which I wirewrapped individual White Swarovski Crystal Pearls to a Sterling Silver Textured Oval Hoops with Gorgeous White (Clear) Topaz gemstone Dangles.

When I work with my Brides on their Custom Jewelry orders, I get to know them just from our "chats" together. I learn about their Wedding plans, I see photos of their Wedding Gowns, their Bridesmaids gowns, their Wedding Colors, etc. etc. I "see" their personality and can feel their excitement and enthusiasm for their approaching Wedding Day.

Being an internet shop owner, I really really enjoy conversing with my customers. My fingers tap tap tap so fast over the keyboards because I have so much to say, suggestions for their jewelry, words of encouragement, and well wishes for their wedding day. I sometimes wonder if they can "hear" me speak thru my words. I certainly imagine them talking to me as I read theirs.

When Stephanie received her Care Package full of her Bridal jewelry in Individually Wrapped Custom Decorated jewelry boxes by me, she sent me this note:

And "yes", this is the "wacky, I'm going blind/insane/can't wait til I tie the knot on this baby" stitching that I did by hand. I know, it looks like I did this while Not wearing my reading glasses.
I actually wanted it to Look like I handsewed it on and wanted it to be "not perfect".
Too much perfection is not my style.
I love the "Ugh, Yes, I did make this Quilt all by myself" Look.

It's taken about 5 months for me to Complete her Quilt.
If I had to count the Actual "work" time spent on creating it,
I'd say about 7 work days...56 hours...or was it wayyyyy more?
I can't remember anymore.

Side 2 kinda grew on me.

I call this side, "Side 1" because it was the side that I was concentrating on.

It took a long time for me to create this monster quilt because the actual quilting of this with my old vintage Bernina was causing me to actually "sweat bullets" as I turned, pulled, pulled and pulled the fabric thru the little opening to the right of my machine in order to quilt the square pattern.

I'm going to beg my gal pal Jean to let me Please use her 3rd child...
her quilting sewing machine loom extravaganza...when I need to quilt my mom's quilt.
(Jean, did you hear that? Ring Ring Ring...)

Yes, I have another quilt to create.
:/ (this is me with the "yes, I'm crazy" grin)

The next one is for my mom for her Xmas, Birthday, Mother's Day,

She passed out on the floor and I had to pour a bucket of iced cold water on her to "wake" her up.

Nah, she didn't. Just wanted to see if you were still reading.

She Lo♥ed it! She was smiling ear to ear and held it up and showed it to everyone. I heard her say to herself that her aunt was not going to get this quilt from her. Ugh, Yes, no one else can get this quilt. In fact, when she no longer wants it, it comes back to meeeeeee! OMG! Creating this quilt and then giving it to Sarah felt like I was giving up my own child. I guess when you spend so much time on your creation, it's kinda hard to give it up. Oh well, I gotta get to work on my mom's quilt now.

Tie Dye Pictutorial

Follow Along to Learn How to Tie Dye...

What you Need...
1) 100% cotton t-shirts, etc. (Pre-washed/dried)...
try using your Old tees to give them "new" life
2) Assortment of Dyes...
One of the brands I used was Rit dye
Had buckets with Yellow, Red, Turqouise Blue, Orange, Green dyes
3) Rubberbands...
the Larger thicker ones turned out to be the better ones
4) Gloves...to protect your hands
5) Salt...to bind the dye to your material
6) buckets or containers...to put your dyes in
7) Hot Tap Water....follow directions on your Dye package on how to make the dye...
Super EZ...pretty much add hot tap water, dye, and Salt
8) Table covered in plastic...garbage bags, shopping bags, whatever you got...
so you don't "dye" your table
9) Outdoors...best to do your dying outside Unless your dying to dye your house and walls
10) Instruction sheets...downloaded from Rit dye website and Bri's Blog "The Craft Begins".
Super helpful. Different "tying" instructions to get different looks. Check them out.

All you need is a PVC pipe and some rope or string

Bondage Time

I've wrapped up little cotton diapers that are going to be some little baby's Burping Cloth

Buckets of Dyes!

Yellow, Orange, Red, Blue, Green...oh my!

Best to start dyeing with the Lightest color first and then go to the darkest.
You can just dip sections of your tees in the different dyes.
Try using Squeeze Bottles filled with Dyes to just squirt the dyes into specific sections.
Remember, you can mix colors to get other colors...
red + blue= purple, red + yellow = orange, yellow + blue = green

To Quick Heat Set the Dye into the Fabric,
each bundle was placed in a plastic market bag and then nuked for 1 minute.

Snip off the rubberbands...a bit steamy from the nuking so watch out...HOT!

I dyed some Vintage Slips and PJs

Such Fun, Fab Colors!

On the line, getting some Sun.

Afterwards, you'll need to Rinse out your tie dyed clothing in water until the water runs clear.

Soaking it also in a water bath with White Vinegar as an extra precaution to set the dye into the fabric.

Then, line dry or throw in your dryer.

I would wash these separate again instead of throwing them in with your regular wash to make sure that the water runs clear and doesn't "dye" all your other clothing.

Try it. It's super fast and super fun. Both kids and adults alike really really enjoy creating their own designs on their clothes.

She wanted to find out if I could create it for her and get it to her before her wedding which was about 4 weeks away. Normally, it takes about 2 weeks time for packages to reach Canada from Hawaii. As I had everything I needed to create her Bridal necklace in Stock, after she Paid for it, I created it and mailed it out to her immediately. She received it in about 10 days..about 8 days Before her Wedding.

DIY Project...Office Organization Hanging Metal File System...2nd Life, A Glorious Life

I just Completed my ReDo of this Metal Filing System

Here's a Pictorial of How I Did It...It's So EZ, You can Too!

Those Heavy Ugly Looking Metal File Systems
Got this one at a Thrift Store

Hmmmm....this looks like it needs a definite Redo

Shaga, shaga, shaga...
You have to lightly Sand down the existing Paint
so that your New paint will
"Stick".

I used this Hand held Sandpaper Handy Dandy Thingamajiggy

Jimmy let me borrow his.

This is what it looks like...sanded, all over.

Then, I painted the Entire thing with a Primer Spray Paint.

Here's the Spray Paint I used.
Primer on the left, New Blue color on the Right.
And, Laurie...
that's the handy dandy little handheld Trigger dodad
that I attach to the Spray Can and use to spray ...
like a gun trigger or water hose trigger...
no carpal tunnel.
Get it from Home Depot or your local hardware store next to the Spray Paint cans.

Handy Tip: Lay Newspaper down on the Ground when you spray paint.
Then, you don't get grass and other "stuff" stuck to your new paint.

It's called: Live and Learn.

After the Primer Paint dried, I sprayed on the glorious Blue color.

Then I used Painter's Blue Tape and taped up the areas I wanted to KEEP Blue.
Used Old Paper to cover the really big areas in the Front.

Then, Spray Paint away with this Bright Cheery Green.

TIP#2: Spray in Well Ventilated areas, away from Precious things you do NOT want to get painted by the mists that flys...like your dog, your car, your house, your child. Got the picture?

Also Tip #3: Wear a Face Mask so you don't breathe in that paint.

Next Step, Using Modge Podge, I "glued on" this Fabric sheets that I got from my Pal.

Side story: I wanted to use "vintage" fabric but had none on hand that would go with this color and "look". I searched online but couldn't find anything either.
Then, couple days later, knock knock on my door...
my next door neighbor held out this stack of Fabric Sheets used for Scrapbooking
and asked if I could use these.
OMG!
Like "Fields of Dreams", build it and they shall come...
well, "think it and it will come".
P.S. I'm really thinking super hard everyday about getting our own home.
I'll tell you how that turns out.

So, I just brushed on the Modge Podge using a big brush. Just use whatever you have to brush on the paste...no biggie. I just have a lot of brushes.

Tip #4: Wash your Brush with Water AFTER modge podging.
or else you'll have a hard dried up brush

From Damned to Glammed...Spray Painting New Life Into Old Stuff...Another DIY Project

Refresh, Revive, Resuscitate Your "Old" Stuff
and Give them a Second Chance at Life
by Spray Painting

Step 1: Remove Dust from Object with brush or towel
Step 2: Using Painter's Tape (bc EZ to Remove), tape up the areas you don't want to get painted.
Be kinda anal with taping...avoid taping places where you want to get painted
because when you later remove the tape,
you'll remove the paint....I know this from experience.

Step 3: Spray Paint the Object according to manufacturer's instructions on the can
I Love to use this handy dandy spray gun attachment which allows
me to spray for a longer time very easily

Here I used All White White White spray paint
and turned an
out-of-date Gold colored Mirror
into a
Shabby Chic Bright White Adorable Mirror

Step 4: Let Dry
Spray paint in WELL Ventilated area...like the out doors...away from anything you don't want to
get "second hand" spray...like your car

Also, if spraying in yard, put down old newspapers or garbage bag
because you don't want to get bits of grass and other organic matter
sticking to your paint...and again, I know this from experience.
It sucks to have to pull off grass from wet paint!

This year, as we do every year, my Family gathers in Waikiki and celebrates 4th of July together. It's a huge food extravaganza...fried chicken, finger licking ribs, musubis aka rice balls, potato macaroni salad, Zippy's Chili and Redondo's Hot Dogs, filipino noodles, sliced iced cold Watermelon, Plantation Pineapple Iced Tea...and more. We gather together, relax under the shade of the palm trees, talking laughing eating.

So much fun, so memorable, so Just Right.

2008 Na Wahine Triathlon

Okay, so you know how I've been trying to find something to get me motivated to Exercise? Well, I have been. And, "NO", the fact that it'll be good for me for the Present and "insurance" for my Healthy Future is NOT, I repeat, NOT enough incentive to get me to Exercise and Eat right. Well, I'm eating fine and dandy...no fast food, no super fatty food, etc. etc. But, it was the exercising part that always was my achilles heal.

This week at a check-up, my doctor asked if I was 1) Exercising, and 2) Eating Right (aka Dieting to lose weight). I told him "No, and NO" to both questions. He asked me "why?" I said "Because I'm Lazy." He shut up. As he was leaving, he said "okay, just start exercising and dieting". I said "ummmmm...." a noncommittal "I don't think so". He said "you're 5'1", you should weigh 105 pounds." I was like "what?! You must be joking. The last time I saw 105 was when I was in high school. The lowest weight I was ever when I was in my fittest shape was at 125 or a bit less when I was doing the Tinman Triathalon." Being the magnaminous doctor that he is, he said "I'll take 125." yeah, you sure would buddy, I thought. Or did I say it out loud?

And, then that very night, my GF called and told me she was training to do the 2010 Na Wahine Super Sprint Triathlon held on September 12th. I said "what?" I did the Na Wahine Triathlon several several years ago...in the days when I was training and doing Tinman Triathlons. I did the Na Wahine for "fun" because I was already in shape from completing the Tinman. Hmmmm....

Wow, is this a "Sign" or what?

I'm into "signs". Okay, this seemed like a "sign", right?

So, I told my GF, I'll train with you and do the mini mini triathlon...250 meter swim/6 mile bike/1.5 mile run. In 2 1/2 months, I think I can get my Jabba the Hut body out of my front door and back 1) swimming in the ocean, 2) biking down the streets, and 3) God forbid...running on the streets again.

and watching my Netflix.

I told her I had to really get myself "hyped up" about it in my head. Like I had to seriously get the rest of my mind and body to agree with my mouth that WE...and I do mean the collective "WE"...my body, mind, and mouth... that We could and would do it. I mean, how hard can it be right? Like going from Zero mph to WARP Speed. Okay, I'm going to need to do a LOT of mental mind games with myself.

So, today was Day 2 of "Training" which so far has consisted of seeing if I could still...Walk. That's right, you heard me. Walk. One foot in front of the other...walk walk. Then, maybe I can start seeing if I still remember how to "Run". A faster version of the "Walk". And, maybe next week, see if I can find my way to the community pool when all the kids are NOT there and see if I can bypass the "Whale" alert. You know, the "OMG, is that a Beluga Whale afloat in our Community Pool?" alert alarm.

So, I decided maybe I can get more hyped up about it and totally dedicate myself to doing this if I posted this in my blog, making it public, and making a work out schedule to get me into shape. I've now posted this in my blog. Okay, next step is to create my work-out schedule. And, maybe get some new shoes. Oh, and new snazzy work out outfit...or maybe I'll wait til I lose some poundage.

BTW, this does NOT mean that I want friends and family to "nag" me about doing this. I gotta do it on my own, without nagging... just some positive encouragement or interest only PLEEZEEE.

Where the hell is my remote control? Lift that left cheek...there it is.

Anyway, here's to 2 1/2 months and counting down.

A Dress Renovation...aka Make Over Time

Here's My Newly Transformed Dress

Before: Jimmy said to "throw it away"
So,
I cut off the Long sleeves
and made Short ones

Then, I ripped off All the blue buttons that were
"pulling" this dress down with it
And handsewed on
some Playful White White White Buttons from my Button Stash

So, the Vibrant Blue would "Pop" like it should've from the Get-Go,
I sewed on some White White White Eyelet Lace
I had on a Roll
Good use for a Roll that I got for less than $5
And didn't have a clue as to what to do with
Until Now...

But, the fun was only beginning
I turned to the Back of the dress
And
added on a Blingey Bling Bling Rhinestone Button
Bling!

Okay, say it with me... Bling!

Voila!
A New and Improved Summer Dress

P.S. If my Makeover didn't work out,
I was just going to cut up the dress
and
use the pieces of fabric for something else.
Luckily, I liked my Re-Do.
And, yeah, Already Worn it out with new black short cropped tights.
I think I'll try wearing it with white cropped tights next.

Introducing my lovely vintage CS Wo Ivory Damask Loveseat. She's rubenesque (aka pleasingly Plump), if she could cook she'd be compared to Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, she has a delightful smile, a warm wit, and a cute little "tinkle" in her laugh. Isn't she just adorable?

She's adorned in Fabric which is Ivory with a slightly darker Ivory damask design. As she's "vintage" (shhhh...can't say her age or she'll kill me), she has some slight smudges here and there which some elbow grease and upholstery cleaner will probably lessen if not make disappear altogether...But, she's perfect even with them.

She's perfectly "healthy" and has no physical damages to her body.

Loves to sit back and enjoy her Netflix and Cooking channel shows. I think she's a closet Korean Soap Opera fan but she's not telling. :)

Tutorial...How to Save a Pair of Jeans by Putting on Your Own Metal Bachelor Button

Metal Jean Buttons...aka Bachelor Buttons

Made by Dritz
Probably can find it on Ebay, at your local craft or fabric store.
I got mine at our local Bernina Store.

The Orange Chalk Mark...need to place the button Right above the Zipper area
for the Perfect placement

I repaired the Hole where the old jean button fell out of
by handstitching with thick white thread

Made a hole using a sharp tool to get thru the thick jean material
then put the pin thru from the backside
This is what it'll look like

From the Front side of the jeans, place the Metal button as it should look on jeans
Place the pin inside the button
Get ready to hit with Hammer

Place the jeans with button and pin on HARD surface
I put it on my metal Anvil
You can just put it on a piece of wood on a hard surface like your driveway or something

Then,l just hammer one good time...that's it!

That was soooooo EZ and FAST
I like that.

I have a funky body shape...aka out of shape body shape. So, only certain types of jeans actually "fit" me well. One brand is "Kut" which I get from Nordstroms. In fact, last week, I bought a pair for about $60+ and started wearing it immediately...like that day. My husband knows me. Whenever I buy something or make something for myself, I'll be wearing it that day or the next. Rip off the tag, put it on, who cares about washing it before I wear it (except for underwear), I just don't care.

Then, a couple days later, wearing my new Kut jeans, I happened to be touring the local Goodwill with my GF Liz and came across...you guessed it, a pair of "Kut" jeans in my size!!!! EEEEkkkkk!

I tried it on and OMG...it fit! Better than the one I bought the day before...bc I actually bought one size too big and it was "stretching" so much so that I felt like one of those repairmen when they bend down you can see the "crack". Yeah, my waistband was hanging.

Anyway, the price on this oldey but goody was $9.99. But, the only bummer was that the metal jeans button fell off in my hand. Apparently, that was the reason that the former owner must have decided to "donate" this bad boy. So, here I am, trying on this pair of jeans without a button...it was in my hand. But it fit. So, I'm buying it! I pointed out this tragedy to the clerk and...you guessed it...mark down 50%! New Old Kut jeans for only $4.99!!!!

What to do about that button? My husband, the MacGeyvor that he is, was stumped. I wanted to know if there was some way to "save" the old button and reuse it. No can do.

Yesterday, had to stop by the local Bernina store to p/up a replacement bulb for my vintage sewing machine (still to be named). They were out...bummer. But, I happened to spy on the wall of sewing notions from heaven a box of Jeans Metal Buttons!!!! What??? Never even thought that these existed. Clerk told me that these were called "Bachelor's Buttons" bc these were the type that a man could use...no sewing required...just a Hammer. Right up their alley. You Pound this baby into your jeans. How cool is that?

So, needless to say, I HAD to share this tutorial with you bc I was just so excited that now I am wearing my brand new Old "Kut" Revived from the dead Jeans...P.S. I did Wash this pair Before I Wore it. And, I wore it to my SIL's B-Day party at Paesano's...yummmy food btw. :) And, my SIL Colleen is now the Lucky New Owner of my Light Coral Vintage Kimono Rosette Blouse (see Post on it Click Here).

Sometimes you look at a piece of clothing and envision it just a heck of a lot better looking. At least, I did when I came across these cute little Tees at Target. Loved the colors, loved the style, but it just didn't have that "oompf"....know what I mean?

So, I took them home and dreamed of a better look for them. Like a Make Over for Tees. Looking at this Light Coral color, I immediately thought of my handsewn Vintage Kimono Rosettes. I Love to collect vintage fabrics especially Lovely Kimono fabric. They sure make pretty Fabric Rosettes. Normally, I turn these Rosettes in Lovely Cuff Bracelets which I then list for sale in my Lilikoi Cottage Shop. (Sorry, they're all Sold Out right now but hopefully in the future I'll create more.) But, this time, I knew they would be perfect for this tee. And, I was right.

Wearing my trusty Reading Glasses (yes, my eyes are not what they used to be), I threaded my tiny needle and started individually handsewing each component on. Everything just sort of fell into place. You know how that goes when everything goes just right.

I added in the small Silk Taffeta bow because everything can use a bit of "Girly Girly" glam, right? It just looked so perfect along with the rosettes and the tiny Swarovski Crystal Pearls.

Who needs Anthropology when you have a bit of imagination and a desire to make things Pretty Pretty, right?

P.S. Whoever the lucky Gal is that gets this tee needs to "handwash" it with loving care. Hmmmm....who should that lucky person be?

Have you heard of the author Stieg Larsson?

You Must read his 3 books, The Millennium Trilogy. It's Absolutely thee Best Summer Books that I've read in a longggg time. Must Reads for Sure. 2 Thumbs up.

Background on Larrson:
Stieg Larrson Larsson was an editor in chief of the magazine Expo. He lived in Sweden. He died tragically in 2004 after delivering his 3 manuscripts, "The Millennium Trilogy". His books have sold over 25 million copies worldwide. The 3 novels in his series are The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
Each of his 3 books have already been turned into films. The movie, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", based on his 1st book premiered this March in America. The 2nd movie, "The Girl Who Played with Fire", is set to premiere in July 2010 in America.

There are scenes in there that are from the book that are Very Raw but necessary. I can't wait to see the next movie based on his 2nd book "The Girl Who Played with Fire" coming next month to American theatres.

You do NOT want to miss out on this movie or his books. I mean it.

If you are visiting Oahu, you have to drive or catch the Bus out to the North Shore side of the island and hang out in Haleiwa town. It's our version of Laguna Beach but way way way laid back. There's a lot of good places to eat, great shops to check out, DELICIOUS Shaved Ice to eat for both Young and the Older folks. And, you can also take a dip in the ocean. It's a quaint surf town with a lot of charm and character. You will LoVe it.

Jimmy and I go there every so often. I love to try out different flavors on my Shaved Ice. Try getting ice cream on the bottom and mochi on the top. Yummy!

Some of my customer's ask me to mail their jewelry gift directly to their Loved ones. I'm happy to do this. And, I always include a handwritten note for them with their own sentiments to their Giftee. I always want to make the gift as personal as possible so that it's as if it came directly from the Giftor (is that a word?). For these special gifts, I also take extra care in decorating the box to suit the event of the gifting.

Recently, I had a customer order a lovely religious necklace for his mother. And, he wanted me to mail it directly to her for her Mother's Day gift. I was happy to do this. I also handwrote his sentiment in a lovely Paris inspired card which I included in her gift.

I just wanted to share this with you because I thought the sentiment was so lovely. I've hidden his name behind the Red Heart for his privacy. What a terrific son! His mother will be so HappY...I know.

To all you mothers, I wish you all a "Happy Happy Happy Mother's Day". You all deserve it. Because of your love, we are the persons we are today.

It's always Bridal Season...what a Wonderful time all year round. I LoVe working with my Bridal Customers and creating the Jewelry of their Dreams for themselves, their Bridesmaids, Flower Girls, and their Loved Ones. It's such a Happy Creative process. Always keeps me smiling with positive thoughts and positive wishes for All.

I enjoy creating jewelry with my brides in mind. It's very helpful if my brides send me a photo or link to a photo of their bridal gowns and bridesmaids' gowns for me to envision the best jewelry to match. There are times when I'll "tweak" one of my designs to better match the gowns. And other times, I'll just create an entirely new design just for that bride or her bridesmaids to complement their gowns.

I Love it when my brides trust my "eye" and let me create something just for them. It really gets my creative juices flowing. I really enjoy doing this.

My newest Bride Customer Stacy worked with me to create her Bridal Jewelry which she will wear on her destination wedding. With her gorgeous Gown in mind, I created my Love Actually Bracelet and matching Earrings just for her which she will wear on her Wedding Day. Taking inspiration from her gown, I created this bracelet to accentuate her look. Her earrings, I blinged up with a bit of Swarovski Crystal Rondelles along with Fresh Water Coin Pearls and Swarovski Crystal Pearls in Light Cream to match her bracelet. A new design was born inspired by Stacy.

For her hair, she custom ordered a Petite Swarovski Crystal and Light Cream Pearl Hairband. I created hers so that it's flexible yet sturdy and won't lose it's shape. This hairband is very comfortable so much so that it won't give her the usual "hairband headache" that you can get with those regular hairbands. Also, I included loops at the bottom of the hairband so that it can be pinned to her hair and won't come off during the day or night of her Wedding Day.

To match one of her dresses which she plans to wear during her Wedding festivities on her destination wedding, she chose Swarovski Crystals in a beautiful peacock green blue...Indicolite blue. With these Petite crystals, I created a delicate pair of earrings with a bit of "bling".

Stacy Loved my Jet Black Swarovski Baroque crystal earrings and wanted a matching bracelet to wear with her little black dress to her GF's upcoming wedding. So, I created my new Chanel Paris bracelet with a mixture of Vintage Miriam Haskell Pearls and Modern Swarovski Crystals and Pearls.

She also ordered delicate bracelets for both her mother and her sister to wear on her Wedding Day. I created these beautiful Swarovski Crystal and Pearl bracelets just for them.

And, for Stacy's Flower Girl, she picked Amethyst Swarovski Crystals to be used in my "Little Girl Crystal Earrings".

I used my decorative designer paper to decorate the jewelry boxes for all her jewelry and her gifts. They look beautiful! Her mother, sister, and Flower Girl will be delighted to receive these beautiful thoughtful gifts from Stacy.

For Sarah's Birthday party this past Saturday, I made a Mini Quilt of 9 pieces of the Fabrics I'm using on her Quilt. A sneak peek. Sarah LoVed it! She can't wait to get the Real thing. I'm jazzed about this quilt. Love the colors. Love Love Love it. I'm already thinking about creating my own Quilt.

Tip to Remember: Pin the Squares so the Squares MATCH up. Eeeeek! I had to rip apart the 1st Long Row from the 2nd row bc I didn't even think of this until sewing the 2nd & 3rd Row. Luckily, I thought of this on the 2nd Row. So, a small lesson.

When I was figuring out where to put the Squares, I again almost lost my mind. But, I kept pushing forward until I came up with a Look that I LoVed. No second guessing. There's too many variations that you can do. I came up with the One that my Eyes LoVEd...and that's it. Sew it before I change my mind.

I'm thinking a Light Aqua for the Back Fabric. A Darker Rich Blue OR Magenta for the Border. Pulling those colors from the existing blocks. Thinking to "Stitch in the Ditch" since the Squares are pretty prominent. Any thoughts?

The Espresso Fiend Strikes Again!

I was able to catch some shots of Tobey when she was up to her little antics again. Always in the kitchen. Always up to something. Always worth a chuckle. Love that crazy bird. :)

I really think that when I'm not in the kitchen, she jumps on my coffee cup and sips some dregs from it. Why do I think this? Uh because when I'm drinking my coffee, she hops on the rim of my cup and makes like she's going to drink some of it. What, the heck are you doing bird?

One of her favorite haunts in the kitchen is the Espresso maker. She loves to toss all my espresso attachments from the frothing mug.

Boy, what would we do without our little loved ones around to keep us smiling and screeching at the same time? :)

I realized that I LoVe cooking and eating Gooey Ooey types of food. My lasagna is gooey, my bread puddings are gooey ooey... it just makes me feel so loved and comfortable. I love to share that feeling with everyone who eats my food.

So, here's my Favorite all time Bread Pudding recipe. This is the ONLY recipe I use. Haven't needed to search or combine other recipes together bc this is the PERFECT one. If you like luciously delectable custardy bread pudding, then make this one. This one is plump, jiggly wiggly, and just plain delicious.

Yes, I'm back. Sorry, my life has been a "bit" busy. Bad me. But now, I'm back again. Doing it again. A Second Quilt. This time for my SIL Sarah for her birthday. I'm going to have to give her some photos bc it won't be ready in time for her party this weekend.

Today, I cut all the pieces and placed the 60 pieces into squares of 3 pieces each. For a moment, I thought I actually Lost my Mind! Eeeek! Have you ever felt like that? My mind was literally spinning as I looked at the different combinations I created and tried to imagine it altogether. Then, I pulled myself together and was satisfied with my puzzle pieces combos. Now, I have to sew them together.

Paper Rose Tag

I love tissue paper, tulle, and ribbons. I can't throw even my scraps away. In less than 10 minutes, I created this lovely tag using a tissue paper rose created from scrap yellow and pink tissues, glued on scrap piece of tulle underneath on a stamped tag using my Close To My Heart acrylic stamps and inks. Attached a scrap piece of silk ribbon to the end and glue gunned on a cute white button. Tah dah!

Roasting Tomatoes...Super EZ and Super Delicious!

Jimmy and I attended an at home cooking class at our friend Laurie's house. Our Cooking instructor was Aline Steiner of "A Table Hawaii". Aline is a Excellent Chef who specializes in being your Personal Chef. She goes to your home and prepares your meals. She also does at home catered affairs and at home Cooking classes. We LoVe Aline! From a Terrific Menu, we worked with Aline, side by side, on each dish. One of them was Roasted Tomatoes A La Caprese. Here's a short version of what we did. Slice ripe tomatoes in half. Deseed tomatoes using spoon...you want to remove as much liquid from them before roasting bc liquid will ooze out during roasting. You want to be roasting and not boiling tomatoes. Roasting Good. Boiling Bad. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with powdered sugar to aid in carmelizing the tomatoes, sprinkle with a lot of salt, add Garlic slices and spices of your choice...we used Herbs of Provence. Roast in Oven at 425 degress. When they're done, let them cool a little. Plate them, add chopped Basil, and slivers of Manchego cheese or whatever cheese you prefer. We added a balsamic vinaigrette. Loved the way they tasted. EZ PZ. Yummy for your Tummy!

I LoVe working with my Brides and creating the jewelry they always wanted for themselves and their bridesmaids and flower girls. Custom Orders for Weddings is one of my specialties.

I've always had a special place in my heart for Weddings. When I was in high school and college, I worked in my aunt's bakery in Kailua called "Craig's Bakery" and decorated cakes. I was their weekend cake decorator. One of my favorite cakes to decorate was the Wedding Cake. I could express myself with just a bag of frosting, spray gun, and accessories. I always took pride and great enjoyment in creating gorgeous tiered wedding cakes for the bride and groom. I knew how important their Wedding Cake meant to them. From decorating Wedding Cakes, I guess it was just natural for me to LoVe creating jewelry for my Brides.

Recently, one of my new Bride's wanted necklaces for her bridesmaids in gemstones. Her bridal colors were green, cream, and white. She initially contacted me thru my Etsy Shop Stacy's Designs 88 enquiring about my Calm Waters necklace. After conversing with her, I created what I named my "Green Grass" Tourmaline Rondelle Gemstone Necklaces just for her bridesmaids. She Loved it so much she wanted an extra one for herself. It always makes me HaPpY when my brides are HaPpY.

In keeping with her bridal colors, I decorated her bridesmaids' jewelry boxes. Lovely Amy Butler paper adorned the tops of the box, along with cream grossgrain ribbon and a little bouquet of vintage posies ties with a white satin ribbon. Lovely.

Made my LoVe tags using my Close To My Heart acrylic stamps. Easy Peasy. Just stamp, hot glue gun on some pretty silk flowers, and then tie a ribbon to the end. Tah Dah!

My New Ribbon Holder

Always wanted a ribbon holder. Crazy about ribbon. So, my husband made me one using scrap wood. Similar to a paper towel holder. Just drill partial hole in middle where dowel will sit. This weekend, I used his power tools and rounded the edges. First time with power tools! Later, spray painted the holder. Today, using my Close To My Heart Rub-ons, added on the pretty filigree Corner details and painted on a Gloss Acrylic coat so the rub-ons don't come off. Will apply several coats. Now, I can use my new ribbon holder...once it dries. Yayyyyy!
